Fascinating facts about Coco Chanel

Let’s discuss one of the most prominent fashion idols the world has ever seen. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, most commonly known as Coco Chanel, was one of the world’s most influential women when it comes to fashion. She was born at Saumur, Maine-et-Loire, France in 1883.
In a world ruled by men, Coco Chanel was able to make her very own kingdom. Her skills are in parallel with any man – sometimes, she was even more superior than them.

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” – Coco Chanel

By the way: Did you know that Coco Chanel began an affair in 1909 with Captain Arthur Edward Capel an English expat, known as “Boy”? He was the man behind Chanel who financed the first Chanel shops in the relationship that lasted for nine years. In 1919 Arthur Edward Capel was killed in a car accident. Chanel is believed to have paid for the memorial which marks the site of the accident.

Coco was a cabaret singer at first.

She was a singer at a café where the audience places money to a plate and then pass it amongst them to show gratitude to her performance. It was her only way of earning money.

The name “Coco” has an interesting history.

The name “Coco” was the nickname gained by Gabrielle Chanel throughout her singing career. The name “Coco” became popular because of two of Chanel’s hits “Qui qu’a vu Coco” and “Ko Ko Ri Ko”. But Gabrielle then said that it was her father who nicknamed her “Coco”.

Coco Chanel had an unpleasant attitude since she had never missed a chance to condemn her competitors. She remarked Paul Poiret’s designs as mere costumes rather than garments that people can truly wear. She appreciated Balenciaga’s designs while questioning her capability to cut. Coco even indicted Christian Dior of wearing women as if they were armchairs.

Did you ever speculate why the symbol of the lion is always present in Chanel’s jewelry? It is for the main reason that Leo was her zodiac sign. The lion can also be seen etched at the bottom of her fleeced suits. “I’m a Leo and like a lion, I display my claws to defend myself “, Coco said. “But believe me I ache more by tearing rather than being torn”, she then added.

“There are people who have money and people who are rich.” – Coco Chanel

Coco presented pants for females.
Coco livid the fashion world when she decided to wear pants in Venice. This was her idea of making her travels with gondola simpler. She resolved that riding a horse in a long skirt will never become comfortable. Coco was a risk taker making her progress for certain.

The 1st designer perfume was introduced by Coco.

Chanel No. 5, one of the most popular perfumes of all time, was given to us by Coco Chanel. Chanel No. 5 was released in 1921 and made a mark in history when Marilyn Monroe was interviewed by the press as to what she wore before bed. She then answered, “Just a few drops of Chanel No. 5.” Chanel No. 5 was named so because it was the fifth scent from Coco’s perfume samples. Coco was rather modest with naming her produces.

“Nature gives you the face you have at twenty. Life shapes the face you have at thirty. But at fifty you get the face you deserve.” – Coco Chanel

Coco matured at an orphanage and joined the fashion industry by crafting hats

Coco’s mother died because of bronchitis when she was still 12 years old. Coco’s father lead two of her brothers to do labor at a farm while three of her sisters, including herself, were sent to a convent at Aubazine which also managed an orphanage.

It was at the orphanage that she was able to learn to sew. She earned her license as a merchandiser in 1910 when she managed a boutique named Chanel Modes which was located at 21 Rue Cambon, Paris. The first of her customers were average females, but the significant people followed soon.

During her younger years, Coco lived a lonely life. Her residence was at the Hotel Ritz in Paris. It was also the place where she died at the age of 87 in 1971. During the days, Coco stayed at her apartment, but she sleeps at the hotels every day. Each day, when Coco leaves the hotel, the receptionist would reach an employee to spray the stairway before she arrives.

Coco transformed females’ fashion when she unbounded women from “clothes that one can’t move”. The popular Chanel suit includes pad pockets, buttons similar to jewelry and a military-inspired jacket. In other words “the women’s suit is invented by Coco” Chanel“.

Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.” – Coco Chanel

Released papers of the French Secret Services suggested that Coco was part of the group Abwher. Coco Chanel spent most of her time staying at the Hotel Ritz during the war. She shared closed rooms with Nazi spies, agents and general officers. Because of this, she had to vacate Europe.

After World War II, Chanel decided to choose a lucky number. On February 5, 1954, she launched a runway modeling event. She was mocked by the French critics but was able to find success in America. The most famous magazine in America, Life, mentioned that even at the age of 71, Coco Channel brought more than just a style, and it’s an uprising!

Coco Chanel’s funeral was filled with white flowers.

The front row seats were occupied by Coco’s models and her coffin was surrounded by white flowers like gardenias, azaleas, orchids and camellias. She was entombed in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her tombstone was by herself and still features the symbol of the lion. Coco Chanel said, “An absence of a stone above me, I’d be interested in to leave and go to Heaven to dress the angels.”
